This is interesting. The two replies both act like it would be totally retarded not to play it as you did. I would definately check.

If he has AJ, KJ, QQ, KK you are stacking him regardless.
If he has JJJ 777 999 he is stacking you regardless.
if he has AQ AK TT 88 JT or anything else which he might very well bluff the play is to check and let him bluff. He's aggressive let him give you his chips. If he has a draw hes not gonna check behind I see him sticking it in a lot with missed hands when you check.

I definately think the play here is to check here and let him bluff but two better players say otherwise can someone explain this to me?

When you 3bet pf and then check a flop people basically never bet. All checking does is give him a free card/let a scare card come on the turn. Get it in now.

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't take me long at all to find a spot where I 3-bet pre, checked flop, villain bets...

That said, you have to shove this flop!

Maybe "basically never" was a bit of an exaggeration but my point is that in general when you 3bet/check people tend to slow down. You certainly can't assume villain will bet if you check here or even think there's a very good chance of that.
