It's a fair question, indeed. I would just first refer you to my earlier post that said:

And if that still doesn't satisfy you, then I don't know what to say. Yes, of course, you may hate this record. You may always hate the Decemberists. But the point is that disliking their previous work really doesn't *necessarily* mean you'll dislike The Crane Wife.

So I find it defeatist and irrelevant to talk about their earlier stuff being "terrible" in a thread about their new stuff.

they were collin melloy's band before the decemberists.

check them out, more on a wilco tip, but if you are a big fan of his voice you will love Tarkio.

i haven't heard the new album, but i'll be the realistic voice and say, if you dont' like their stuff now, i doubt anythign new will turn you into a fan.

i know if someone told me XXX (let's say red hot chili peppers or REM, two bands i really dislike, but like maybe a couple songs by) had a new album that was way bettter tehn anything they have ever put out, i would just know it's not possible.

plus there's no making up for a voice you cannot stand.

I saw this thread last night and started the download imediatly. I've been looking foward to this album for a while and I'm not disapointed at all. I started listening this morning and have had it on repeat all day so far.

I don't know if its as great as the OP makes it out to be, but it is definatly great.

On a somewhat related note, hearing the new cd makes me even more upset about missing their concert here in 4 days.
