Default What\'s the most heroic thing you\'ve ever done?

I just got asked this.

The best I could come up with was going above and beyond the call at work to help somebody graduate.

I assume some of us must have some pretty sweet stories, and the rest of the answers will be entertaining in their tiny scope.

When I was twelve I went whitewater rafting with my dad and brother. My dad, who is older, fell out of the raft and was sucking down water and really struggling. I jumped out and grabbed my dad and swam him back to the raft. They pulled him in, and he coughed up a bunch of water, but was fine. Wasn't particularly heroic, but meh.

Also, in college, my roommate and I were drinking and campus police came, and when they came in, they saw alcohol under the futon, and asked whose it was. I told them it was mine.

My wife's Nana became very ill this year and I basically took over responsibility for overseeing her care. At great financial and emotional cost my wife and I made Nana's last months as good as they could possibly be, despite the uselessness of Nana's daughter (my wife's aunt, my wife's mother is dead).

That sure doesn't sound very heroic written out. Oh, well.

without going into details...my friend died instantly (or so the doctors told us later) when his heart stopped (at the age of 20) during an athletic competition...but at the time we didn't know this. so i was the one that reacted and came to the (failed) rescue.

as for this:
[ QUOTE ]
It's not heroism though -- it's just instinct. Most of these stories are just instinct except for the skinheads one.

[/ QUOTE ]
i 100% disagree. in my situation there were dozens of people who could have reacted and in the end, i would say 2 did anything in a helpful and timely manner. so yes the skinhead thing was extremely heroic but i was amazed at how few people who didnt know what to do just didnt do anything (eventually not everybody can be of use but there is something to be said about just acting rather than thinking...as well as being aware enough to see something-whether it be a baby in danger or a problem about to arise...so anybody that does is showing signs of heroism albeit a result of instinct.

but what was interesting for me was the fact that my actions went to waste in a sense. i didn't save a life although i tried but there was little to no satisfaction and a whole lot of sorrow. all i really had to grasp onto was knowing the that when encountered with such a situation, i'd step up to the challenge (which was a question i always asked myself).

I think his point was that it shouldn't be considered "heroic" if nothing is at risk. The guy with the bat could've gotten killed. By trying to help your friend, although admirable, you didn't really risk anything.

(Maybe that's not what he was going for, but that's how I interpreted it)

Probably didn't go too well by the wording.

When I was 18, my friend and I were driving away from his house (parents house) and we saw a huge cloud of smoke rise into the air. We drove down the street and this 5000 sq foot house (just the frame, as it was new construction) was blazin. The home next door was inhabited, and the roof was starting to catch fire. We got up on the roof with a garden hose and sprayed down the cedar shingles until the fire dept arrived. Saved it from going up in smoke. Headlines the next day read "fire dept saves neighboring home from blaze".... I told my dad about it when I got home, and he thought I had caused the fire for some reason. Bitched me out. Turns out some 12 year old were playing with matches.

Also saved my ex father in law from drowning in a riptide in Hawaii.

Eff that. Anybody can be a tough guy in the heat of the moment, when they've got somebody to impress, or can fulfill some fantasy, or see a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. That [censored] took real fortitude and was v. hard and v. expensive. Lots of emotional, moral & psychological courage there. YOU'RE EVERYTHING I WOULD LIKE TO BE, SLIM.

To answer personally: Wow, what a bummer topic. Heroism is something that I've always aspired to, and dreamed about, but rarely if ever actually achieved.

On the one hand, I take pride in my moral courage, and conviction to say/do what I feel is right in the face of haters / fear of the consequences. On the other hand, that same pride has led me pretty far astray on more than one occasion. Many decisions that felt really good / 'right' at the time seem pretty questionable in retrospect, and I doubt that much, if any, enduring good has come from my 'hero' moments.

So to actually answer the OP - I don't know. At times I've tried to make a difference in peoples' lives, bring hope to the hopeless, blah blah blah. But I have no idea what, if any, good I have accomplished.

Anybody wanna start drinkin'?
