I just think about job changes, vacations with the kids or the significant other, whatever. Tieing yourself to anything for 50 or 80 years is pretty tough.

I dunno about greys specifically, but the macaws and other large birds can get bitey and tear up furniture if not socialized properly. Friends of mine have one, and love it to death. And each has plenty of little bite scars.

As someone pointed out, this means that you need to find a home for it whenever you want to take a vacation, go on a business trip, or even spend the night at the casino playing cards. It's similar to having a child in terms of the responsibility. Think before you buy.

Thanks. I definitely don't want to rush things and am in no hurry, so the worst case is I wait for another year if I don't figure it out yet.

Does anybody know about the Hahn's macaw?

This thread needs pictures of wacki's grey.

From what I remember about wacki's thread, greys are [censored] awesome and I'd love to own one at some point.

I have a grey too and hamsamich is right about the bird making all kind of sounds. Mine does this high pithced tone that hurts my ears. I actually moved it because I thought it was damaging my ears. Another thing to remember is that if you feed it seeds, you will eventually get little moths flying in your house. These are mill moths and can get annoying. The good side is that they are the coolest pet you can have. What other animal can you buy that can say "whaaaatttsuuuuuuuuuuuuuup?" when people come over or will "raise the roof" for a dorito. Mine doesn't escape from his cage, but he is definitely a messy creature. Wherever you put the cage there will be food laying around it.
As for vacations its just like any other pet that you would leave at home when your not there. Someone will have to come and feed it and give it fresh water. It's not as bad as has been mentioned, at least you don't have to let it outside to potty or anything. We usually leave some classical music on or jazz if we're not at home.

Others seem to have already made all the points I wanted to bring up, but based on my experience living with a Grey, I'd emphasize:

They are very smart, but require a lot of attention. If not given enough attention, they will suffer (feather picking, anxiety, etc.)

With a Grey in the house, you'll need to limit any noise (or words) you wouldn't want to hear over and over for years. High pitched noises ("low battery beep" on the smoke detector, alarm clock, etc.) are favorites of our Grey and something that is "cute" the first time the bird does it can be very annoying the 1000th time. We try not to buy any phones, microwaves, etc. that don't have a "silent" option.

Like gwhiz_612, I moved the Grey across the room b/c it was making a "squawk" noise that was hurting my ear.

I think that squawk alone would make me eventually kill the bird.
