Default String Raise?

During a recent home game tournament, player in late position with an unraised pot announces a raise. Puts out his chips to make the call and then reaches back to put out his raise. While counting out chips in front of him, in small denominations, he realizes under his one stack he has a large denomination chip he wants to use. Takes the raise back out from in front of him and then replaces it with the larger denomination chip, which actually turned out to be a larger raise, then his intended raise with the small denomination chips. Eventhough he verbally announced "RAISE" before making any action, he can't reach back and forth, back and forth making his raise. People can get an action from his original raise and then he can raise more if he feels neccessary. That isn't correct and said that was a string bet. We weren't playing for millions of dollars, but just wanted to be playing properly. He disagreed and said i announced raise, i can put my call out and go back for a raise. Does anyone have in print, concrete rules regarding verbal signal of action and what can preceed to be a string bet following that? Just didn't seem right you can declare raise and keep going back once you do so.

If you say raise you can put out the bet and go back for the raise...ONCE
You dont count chips in front of the cards, if you do what ever hits the felt that is in your hand is the raise (assuming it is enough to be a raise).
However, if he brings out chips and as he is counting them out says "100" and only has 50 in his hand then he is allowed to go back to his stack.
Rules vary from casino to casino so its sure to differ from home game to home game. Establish rules and follow them from here on.
Solve the how thing with a betting circle...

If there is a bet line, you can do all sorts of counting out in front of you as long as you don't shove anything over the bet line.

You can put the call over the bet line and then the next stack of chips you put out over the bet line is your raise and that is final.

If there is no bet line, then you can use an area in front of you to sort out your chips bringing them back and forth at will. Then, you must shove your stack forward and together and that's your raise.

Personally, we don't worry much about string raises in our home game, especially if a guy is opening an unraised pot. I don't see how he could gain any advantage by musing over his raise amount. People aren't doing anything other waiting for his final total.

A lot of people, myself included, feel the string raise rule is used by experienced players to take advantage of someone getting a little sloppy, far more often then it is used to protect players against a deliberate attempt to gain information.

In a home game, I say just let it go unless you think your opponent is deliberately trying to induce opponents into revealing their intentions. This is especially true if you are uninvolved in the hand.

Interesting debate... yeah, without a bet line there isn't really anything official is there?

My biggest annoyance when playing AWAY from my homegame is NOT being able to talk/lie about my cards!

It adds so much to the game... why not?

I think the only exception to the above is when you announce exactly how much your going to bet or raise. If a player announces the amount I believe they can then put out the amount in several motions.
