Default Moving to Santa Clara county!!!

This time it’s official, I’ve got a sales territory from Santa Clara down the coast to San Luis Obispo. I’ve gotten great moving advice in the past, so here are the facts…

Commission based; more than 50, but less than 100. So I’m not buying a house.

Would feel dumb spending more than a grand in rent, yet conversely still want to live in a downtown setting.

24 years old, no wife and kids, still like to party.

Santa Clara county is going to be 90% of my business, I want to live in it.

I’ve never stepped foot in Santa Clara county, but google maps shows me San Jose is pretty much in the middle. So I’m thinking about downtown San Jose, maybe near San Jose State University, for the assumed bar scene and activity.

I want to snowboard and autocross out there.

Where should I live? Advice in general? Should I allocate more money to hookers or blow?

Here is a picture to clue in to what the downtown San Jose bar scene is like.

Hey MD:

I just moved down to Campbell/Los Gatos this summer. It's pretty sleepy this far south.

If you are looking for a little night life, a lot of the towns have mini downtowns that are OK (more so for restaurants, cafes, but there are some decent bars too). Places like Sunnyvale, Mt. View, etc. I like Palo Alto a little better but that is out of county + price range too most likely. Like the other poster said, I would generally recommend against downtown SJ, though they are getting a little more life down there.

I dunno about autocross but Tahoe is the place to go for snowboarding, about 4 hours east. There are a good number of posters from the south bay, give a shout out when you get here or if want any more specifics. I'm still learning the area but worked around here a ton before relocating.

Ihate-

So the San Jose bar scene sucks? crap, there goes my plan.

if there is no consensis on the knock-out place to live, i guess i will just fly out there for a weekend to scope it out. deep down i was wishing for someone to save the day with a magic city full of fun people and booze.

campbell's been struck down, san jose is half alive. that pretty much leaves sunnyvale and mountain view.

lesser of two evils?

BTW i went out in Tempe, AZ a couple weeks ago, and it has ruined me as far as nightlife goes. reminded me of college spring break, but it was october! beautiful..

Grew up in Mountain View, nightlife is pretty nil. I just left to come to San Diego for school last year so my information is pretty current. SC County is unlike any other "suburban" arae in the world in the sense that it isn't really a suburb, yet has several small towns with small downtowns (a la downtown MV/Palo Alto) and all of the real party scene is still in the city (SF). You are looking for a "downtown setting"...which to my knowledge doesn't exist anywhere in the Bay Area aside from SF.
Granted I'm younger than you and not a huge partier, I am fairly certain that you will be fairly disappointed if you're looking for a "downtown setting" and any sort of "nightlife" outside of SF.
Also, rent (I assume) will be astronomical compared to what you're looking to spend but I could be wrong. It's a very expensive place to live.

Autocross events are usually held in Oakland, in the Coliseum parking lot, and in the Monster Park lot.

More info here: http://www.sfrscca.org/solo2/

Also, "Would feel dumb spending more than a grand in rent." $1000 is pushing it. Won't be the best neighborhood, but probably doable.

Actually, Palo Alto is still in Santa Clara County, though at the northernmost portion of it. Definitely a nice area. Really depends on where OP's business will be. "Santa Clara County" is pretty big (40 minutes from the southernmost portion of San Jose to Palo Alto), so a little more info may be necessary.

Defintely recommend spending a weekend out here to look for a place.
