Rivera is a [censored] machine, like the T-1000. He looked awesome in the ALDS, just disgusting in the game where the Indians clinched it. He really hasn't shown signs of wearing down, at least from what i've seen. I wouldn't be too worried about giving someone like him, who's shown the ability to throw inning after inning after inning without missing a step, a 4 year deal even considering his age.

he had alot of games this year where he looked like todd jones

Name 1 pitcher that doesn't have a few games a year where he looks like Todd Jones? His final number speak for themselves.

Take out his bad April and this is what Mariano looks like:

62 2/3 IP
2.30 ERA
66 SO
9 BB
9.5 K/9
7:1 SO/BB
3 HR allowed

over the last couple years rivera has definitely had this thing going where he starts off really slow, but then after a month goes back to being predictably dominant.

From may 16th to august 13th, he only walked one batter. He allowed 2 hrs before may 9th, and then only allowed 1 the rest of the year. That is pretty [censored] extreme. And Rivera has done it every single season for what is a baseball eternity. He is an extreme outlier. Resigning Mo is a must, with how much money the team has and just how rare opportunities to sign guys like him are, it just has to happen.

I"m not being results oriented where he got beat up in a game... sometimes he still got out of jams where he looked bad....
it happened quite a few times during thet year (i'll give him a pass for april)

I recall one game against the sox where ortiz hit a ball to the warning track and mariano got out of it... he looked awful, slow mph and not much movement

also don't forget all his post season performances... adds up to probably close to two seasons worth of innings, that's obviouslt got to shorten his career

commiting to him as a closer in 2010 isn't smart... the yankees shouldn't risk having a mediocre closer ever

yeah 'cause you can't win with a guy like adam wainwright

look at the numbers. they are the exact same as 2006, only more hits. this means rivera got unlucky (or phenomenally lucky in 06 - probably both are true). there's no indication that his game is declining at all. he doesn't walk anyone and he strikes out a man per inning.

you've started to use fielding metrics - now it's time to learn about DIPS (defense-independent pitching statistics)

So on one hand I have these numbers telling me Rivera gave up 9BB and 3 HR over 62 innings (That is one HR every twenty innings... seriously did any other pitcher allow less than that?), but on the other I have some guy telling me he looked awful and had slow MPH and little movement. Uhhh real tough call.

Also, he put up the numbers he did in front of a really crappy defense and in the AL east.

K-Rod allowed 3 in 67 IP this year (and 2 in 84 IP in 2004!).

Saito allowed 3 in 78 IP last year.

Mariano allowed 1 HR in over 107 IP in 1996. That's nuts.

I'm not saying he didn't have a great year, because i know he did... but if you watched him pitch he did show brief signs of decline, not because he pitched a bad game, but because his stuff wasn't the same... he is getting older

Where do you rank him among relief pitchers last year?

where do you rank him for this coming year?

2009?

2010?

keep in mind all his postseason innings... I just don't think he'll be good enough to be the yankees closer in '10, but since he's mariano he will still be the guy regardless of his performance, it could come back to bite them
