Oh Canada! Let\'s get rid of the income tax.
Oh Canada! Let's get rid of the income tax and replace it with nothing.
The income tax is not a necessary evil, it is simply evil. The underlying assumption is the government owns your labour, your very life, and allows you to keep some of it. Working is not profit, it is trade; you trade your labour for someone else's money. This should not be subject to a tax. If we are to abolish the income tax we need to greatly rethink our government programs. It is a myth that the welfare state benefits the poor. There are certainly SOME benefits; like for example, not paying for health care, but the costs far outweight the benefits. What are the costs? " In 1968, Canada was second only to the United States among the G7 economies in per-capita income. Productivity is extremely important because that equates to how much the workers get, and I heart the workers, even if they don't heart my polices. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl...Story/Business So we're becoming bankrupt. But we care about people! Isn't that important? Well of course the truth is we don't care. It's nice to imagine the government as some benevolant force that goes around solving the problems of poverty... but as I walk around my city, and pass homeless man after homelessman, I have to think : gee, maybe it's not working. Socialism and government intervention in the economy always fail; the question isn't if but when. So let's stop it already. We must begin dismantling the welfare state immediately, and through getting rid of useless government programs that serve only special interest at the expense of the general population we can afford to get rid of the income tax. And replace it with nothing. AND DON'T RAISE THE MINIMUM WAGE. THAT PUTS PEOPLE OUT OF WORK.

First off, he's talking about Canada, so the answer to your list is that he's not proposing to get rid of any of those. Second, if you drop the nitty argument I just made, the answer to your questions is 1. nothing and 2. all of them.

[/ QUOTE ] This statement seems to assume that large countries for some reason should have a higher per capita income than small ones. But the top 7 countries in per capita GDP all have a population much smaller than Canada's. What are you trying to say? (Not to mention that most of the countries at the top of this ranking are more socialist than Canada anyway.)

Well that is actually a quote (it's sourced above) so the question is what is that person trying to say. I can't tell you really, any more than I could rephrase what he said; but that's just my personal, subjective opinion of what he said. My point was that Canada's per capita income is dropping compared to other top countries and I think it's pretty clear the leftist policies of my government are to blame, as in the last 40 years we have seen a phenomenal expanse of government.

Canada's GDP per capita may be slowing, but it's hard to blame the "leftist policies" specifically. As we like to say around here, correlation is not causation. So let's have a look at some other countries to see how they've fared. We'll take the US and some other more leftist countries and look at change real GDP per capita.
Country 2000-2006 US..............1.5% Canada..........1.5% Norway..........1.7% Spain...........1.7% Sweden..........2.3% (!) UK..............2.1% France..........1.0% Germany.........0.9% Netherlands.....0.9% Denmark.........1.3% Australia.......1.8% http://www.bls.gov/fls/flsgdp.pdf As you see, growth is pretty all over the map. Some leftist countries out perform the US; others do not. So to say that "leftist policies" are hurting Canada's growth is, on its face, incorrect. Perhaps it is just the fault of the specific leftist policies, but certainly not of leftist policies at large.
