is this really all you can afford?

the Gateways seemed like a great deal I ran into while searching for a $500-600 used/refurbed laptop, more a matter of its all I really want to spend if I'm going to get a model this old. The IBM thinkpad guy I ran into while
trying to sell my Dell 2405fp monitor.

*Update* The Thinkpad guy has come up to $240 cash plus the IBM Thinkpad for my 1.5 yr old Dell 2405fp

Guys: It's not going to be my main system.I was just going to buy the Gateway because the price was good, (He'll actually take $270. Just want something for playing online poker, websurfing, etc. A semi-disposable while in Vegas this next month and I don't want to drop the dime to get the same specs in a new model running on vista for $700+

Probably go with the gateway, thanks fellas, and to the Vaio guy; be part of the solution: sell me your Vaio for $280 so I can have something nice

I don't think you're going to like the performance on either one of these machines. Seriously, running XP pro with 256mb RAM is going to be painful.

battery life will likely suck with a P4, and the fan will run constantly. you would be much better served finding a cheap Core Duo machine. The core duo's still smoke anything AMD has and they aren't very spendy.

appreciate the responses guys thanks,

as I was saying "I know nothing."

and have another dumb question: is it possible to plug in a seperate PC into a laptop and then use the laptop's monitor for that 2nd PC ?

(I have an old tower at a friend's house I want to load some music/transfer some files etc. onto a hard drive, but have no monitor besides a laptop at that location) was hoping just to bring PC cable not an extra monitor
