i think this is a whole different animal from the prison idea, meaning i wouldn't do prison for less than a big big number like the 20 million idea, but........

i think a year in a monastery would probably be good for about anyone, give you a new perspective, etc. i guarantee you would never feel bored again in your day to day life.

i am not volunteering for this duty, but i think it could have benefits for the body and soul beyond the sum of its parts. as far as paying goes, won't most monasterys take any volunteers? that is the real question. J.

I cant imagine this being much different from prison.

Yes. It's a well-covered up fact that monk-rape is a real and growing problem in America's monestaries.

well, I imagined it as a less violent version of prison. So I was interested to see how people would consider this compared to the other thread.

I don't have a house, a car, a job, or a girlfriend, and I'm not much of a baller, but right now I wouldn't want to live in a monastery for a year. I don't know how much money it would take for me to do it, maybe 500k.

To not see my two kids for an entire year? $20 million.

I think alot of people would do this for free if they felt like they wouldn't have to start their whole lives over with finding a job, house, car all over agian once the year is up.

This is really the only thing holding me back. There is a guy at my office who spent 8 months at a monastery and he said it was a developmental experience for him. I'd probably be willing to do this for $30,000; free if someone could take care of all of the above.

Yeah...I would just need enough to get back on my feet after the year. Given that I've been inadvertently observing a vow of celibacy for the last couple of years, anyway...I can't imagine this would be a big problem.

Just enough to max out my Roth IRA for the year, which I think is still $4,000. This assumes all expenses are included and there are no bills to pay back home.

I'm spiritual though and know the exact place I'd pick.

Eh the amount actually might vary between $4,000 and $50,000 depending on my mood. $50,000 and there's no thought involved. Right now I'd take easily down to $30,000. $20,000 and below is where it would get questionable.
