$1/2 or $2 straight holdem.. is it beatable?

I recently came to the realization that the GulfStream casino opened its doors and has a pretty decent poker room. It also happens to be 5 minute drive away from me. So i am considering switching from online to full time B&M playing $1/2 or $2 straight. the rake for $1/2 is 10% $5 max, im not sure about $2 straight. I wouldnt tip the dealer unless i win a 20bb pot or more, i also wouldnt buy drinks. And it costs me about $1.50 round trip in gas driving there (v8 <>17mpg).

incase u dont know $2 straight game is played with $2 bets on every street including preflop. Blinds are $1 and $2, this is the biggest limit in FL due to the retarded $2 max bet.

Here's what i need help figuring out..
1. what to play 1/2 or 2 straight?
1/2 pros: loose, lower risk compared to bankroll. cons: loose, less profit potential per session.
2 straight pros: tighter competition, more profit potential per session (50% more) cons: bigger risk, tighter competition.

2. Are any of these beatable due to the 10% rake structure and the high varience due to loose play?

3. The reason why im considering switching is because i find live play more fun due to it being more sociable, and also easier due to more fish than online. Am i delusional?


Btw i am playing with a $800 roll, and i was beating .50/1 online for 2.5bb/100 over 20k hands

$2 straight actually sounds kind of interesting. Even though you say it is tighter than the 1/2, I bet the game is relatively looser preflop and on the flop (relative to the "correct" strategy). Just make sure you are making the necessary adjustments.

Does that mean only 7 to flop instead of 8, and 4 going all the way to river instead of 5?

If you want to go to have fun, then go have fun. Even if you CRUSH the game, you are looking at $6 an hour, with way higher variance than online.

Compared to online, you are going to need a bigger bankroll, have higher variance, make less money, and play a smaller amount of hands per hour.

Go there to have fun, but make your money online.

What Cardcounter said. Go if you want to have fun, play poker for enjoyment, and to have live experience/reason to be out when you don't feel like playing online. As for making money or building a roll, forget it. The game, if beatable, will be beatable for less than a minimum wage hourly job if you do in fact beat it over the long run. It may in fact be unbeatable, it's tough to crunch the numbers, but that's a large rake for a game which will feature very little poker to be played, and mostly a battle of who can show down the best hand. Stick to online or grab some side-employment if you're itnerested in making extra money, i don't think this is worth your effort.

Can have a legitimate expectation of walking away from the casino with more money in your pocket than you started -- probably.

Can you quit the day job and play poker at these stakes -- highly doubtful.

Is it worth it for an evening's entertainment where you expect to make a few bucks. -- Purely subjective. If I wanted to play live, yeah, sure, why not?

Fla has big buyin SNGs where they take like a 22% rake, or some such nonsense...

The rake on the $45 SNG in Florida is $12. Only $33 goes to the prize pool.
