Re: When would you stop watching, and shout?
say you were the 15th person in the crowd to show up... would you say anything? If it were me I might just sit there and watch what's happening. Not to be a dick, but because I would have assumed someone else had already told a lifeguard. I doubt that most people are stupid enough NOT to tell the lifeguard. I'd feel like captain f'n obvious to point out "OMG look, there's a shark out there!"

Re: When would you stop watching, and shout?
It kinda struck me that it wasn't just one group. It was group after group after group.

[/ QUOTE ] I honestly think I wouldn't do anything due to the fact that I'd ASSUME that the right person was being notified, or help was on the way. I can't imagine 15 people not doing anything about it, but I guess I'd be the 16th? |

Re: When would you stop watching, and shout?
Sounds like. The more interesting question being -- why? And would it be worth it to you to do nothing?
Would the pay-off be worth the price your soul had to pay? Would the excuses and rationalizations ever be good enough? Could a child being torn to pieces ever be worth that little, or our own conformity or need for truly sick voyeuristic thrills be worth that much? The surprising and disappointing answer seems to be yes. |

need for truly sick voyeuristic thrills [/ QUOTE ] You used phrases such as this several times to describe what must have been happening internally for the onlookers. Do you REALLY believe a good percentage of these people did not warn you because they were HOPING to see you attacked? |

[/ QUOTE ] I believe someone was asking them not to give a warning until he was able to get his camera first, and by the time he returned, OP had already been out of the water. |

Re: When would you stop watching, and shout?
[ QUOTE ]
I'm still uneasy thinking about that to this day. Not that much about the shark. About the people. And not just a small clutch of them. This not only wasn't just one person, it wasn't even just one group. It was multiple groups of people who had decided not to say a thing or make themselves noticed, but just to watch and see what happened. [/ QUOTE ] Stupid people hang out in groups, too. Glad to hear you escaped such a mind-numingly bad situation unscathed. |
