Nolo press makes quite good books on how to start and run a small business. Very readable, and contain just about everything you need to know to get started (which is far more than has been or will be discussed here).

Nolo has some good stuff on their website too.

Anyway - http://www.irs.gov/instructions/i1040sc/ch02.html has a bunch of rules. My advice however is to use an accounting package such as QuickBooks Pro, enter what you can - save ALL your reciepts - and then go see a CPA once you have things "running" and have incurred most of the expenses you will incur. They'll show you how to file everything properly. Then when you have new expenses you don't know how to file you can call them and get advice (for a small [or large] fee).
