Asante Samuel gave an interview yesterday, saying that his contract status is looking very very good. signing him to a good long term deal would cap a perfect offseason (so far)

Pats sign Kelley Washington.

The Patriots gave Washington a five-year deal worth up to $22 million, including a $300,000 signing bonus. The deal is similar in structure to the one that Donte' Stallworth signed with the Patriots. It contains a $4 million roster bonus payment that the Patriots will have to decide whether they want to pay a year from now. Washington turned down the chance to play in Miami, opting instead for New England.

WR's now include:

Donte' Stallworth
Wes Welker
Reche Caldwell
Jabar Gaffney
Kelley Washington
Chad Jackson
Bam Childress
Kelvin Kight
Jonathan Smith

plus possible Troy Brown (doubtful)

my guess is that 6 are on the active roster to start the season, with Chad Jackson on the PUP

Donte' Stallworth
Wes Welker
Reche Caldwell
Jabar Gaffney
Kelley Washington

someone else. I think they are throwing a whole bunch on the wall and seeing what sticks. they want all these guys to have a full TC to spend with Brady

Brady was pretty grumpy early in the year before he decided it was what it was with his receivers.

these poison pills contracts need to stop, I'm amazed they still allow it

[/ QUOTE ]

It came up in some CBA talks. The union loves it since it facilitates player movement. The league had tons of salary cap issues to resolve and didn't feel like making another concession to get rid of the poison pill.

It does, however, appear that the league told the Pats not to use it and facilitate a trade (as another poster said). The union isn't too happy.

speaking of Borges, here is a great old quote I stumbled on

"On a day when they could have had impact players David Terrell or Koren Robinson or the second-best tackle in the draft in Kenyatta Walker, they took Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who had 1 sacks last season in the pass-happy SEC and is too tall to play tackle at 6-6 and too slow to play defensive end. This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon.

- Ron Borges, MSNBC after 2001 Draft."

Wow, just wow.

How this man still had a job until recently is amazing to me. Quotes like this make me really glad that I gave up reading the Boston papers for following sports.

And this quote is pre Belicheck. So this debunks Borges' defenders that are saying he's a great sportswriter except when it comes to Belicheck.

Actually Belichick was the coach at the time (I believe the 2001 draft was his first as NE coach). Borges still sucks though.
