I would recommend doing the PADI courses if you haven't started yet. They are great and really add to the appreciation of breathing underwater.

True, that whole drowning thing sucks. Sharm el Sheikh was awesome-went in 86 but someone said all the coral is bleaching out. The variety of species was incredible. FYI

Sharm el Sheikh isn't all that great now.

Maldives has been my favourite so far.

I've done like 30-40 dives in Puget Sound, Hawaii, and the Great Barrier Reef. I've snorkeled extensively in Grand Cayman too.

The big island is the best I've been too for semi-cheap diving that's awesome. There are tons of great shore diving sites all over the Kona coast.

that pretty much sounds like a dream come true. are you guys around LA? I'll probably be there in the near future, maybe we can meet up.

I dove catalina and it was lots of fun - not mind-blowing, but def fun.

When you are in California you should check out the Channel Islands. When I was getting certified my dive instructor said they were ranked in the top 10 most pristine places to dive. They have a good variety of dive sites and can have some great marine life. The visibility was great when I was there and I would definitely recommend it. A lot of ships leave from Ventura which isn't too far from LA so there is plenty to do. It's also close to Santa Barbara if you are looking for a more relaxed scene.
