It is true what you said earlier (I think it was you, Dom): that the old Pretenders sounds like it is something ultra-modern. They were so far ahead of their time. Presenting the new Pretenders is like trying tell someone that the Rolling Stones are so great because of Voodoo Lounge.

Is it weird that during Hynde's "Creep" I thought "You know, she kinda looks like Thom Yorke"?

I don't know why Katy's trying to turn you off of Chrissy Hynde with her links to ridiculous songs

lol, I'm just giving you crap for the Smelly Cat link. But it's Chrissy Hynde - if you want to prove her brilliance to someone you should link him to The Pretenders, no?

I wasn't as impressed with Angel of the Morning. It felt like she was rushing the tempo, and she wimped out on the high notes on the line "Just touch my cheek before you leave me," opting to stay on the same pitch as "Just call me angel of the morning," rather than jumping up a fifth.

Those are fair and accurate comments, for which I have two things to note. First, regarding the rushed tempo - given that this was a TV sitcom I wouldn't put it past the producers to have placed a time limit on the song to make sure it fit the time constraints of the episode. As for the choice not to jump up a fifth that reflects the comment I made about Chrissy knowing the limits of her vocal range. If she can't hit it properly she won't go for it.

Here are some more performances to peruse...
"Brass in Pocket" unplugged: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79Rr63nIBac - This one is typical Chrissy in terms of phrasing and sound and would be fair fodder for vocal critique
"Message of Love" with Incubus (a band I really dig): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwJJG2c02bw "We are all of us in the gutter, some of us looking at the stars" - gotta love the Oscar Wilde quote
"Tattooed Love Boys": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bhcl-TP4Yqc Chrissy and The Pretenders in full-on kick-ass punk mode

LATE EDIT: "Tattooed Love Boys" and "Brass in Pocket" are from the eponymous first album while "Message of Love" is from Pretenders II. All Dom's links are from the first album. Two "must owns" for any student of rock and as others have said, completely fresh and relevant to this very day.

I adore Patsy Cline and consider her one of the finest voices ever in country music but in terms of this thread she fails on the songwriting part. To confirm my suspicions I just checked her Greatest Hits CD and she didn't write a single one of them. You can thank people like Willie Nelson, Mel Tillis and Don Gibson for that.
