Fruit Baskets

This might seem like a trivial question to some of you but I have no experience in giving fruit baskets or know anyone that does.

My mother was recently diagnosed with anemia and this one doctor did a great job of treating her. I want to show him my thanks but do not know the "correct" way of doing so. Do I just buy a fruit basket and say "thanks, I really appreciate it?"

Also, the companies I found that look decent are the fruit company and FTD Fruit Basket. 1800FLOWERS has some nice selection but doesn't deliver to hospitals. Any other recommendations?
