let's talk Jam/Fold tables in Mathematics of Poker for a second (for you turbo junkies)

assuming i'm not the only one that's read this book 5 times and been confused every minute of it, in the tables, it says, for example, to call a shove with QJo if your stack is 19.9 bbs.

now, is this against an opponent who is shoving according to the optimal strategy? because when i look back at my games, people are shoving roughly the top 15%-20% of their hands, which makes a call here -EV.

so, should i throw these tables which i am convinced have cost me lots of $$ over the months and just go by straight equity calcs against opponent's shoving range?

derosnec,

if i understand them correctly, the chen/ankenmann tables are based on equity calcs against opponent's shoving range given that villain is shoving optimally.

really, i think those tables just give you an idea of where to start - is villain shoving more? loosen up. is villain shoving a tighter range (most likely) - then tighten up. the tables also give a basic idea of which hands to add as the looseness and tightness of villain oscillates.

if you have a specific idea of how villain is shoving, your calcs should be a lot more profitable.

Use all the info available to you. Villain says "what? you went all in with nothing?" at the beginning of the hand. This can't be a good hand to c/r bottom pair no kicker given your image. That being said, I would still lead out 125-150 to try to take it down right away and then shut down if i'm called.

Oh man Hokie had a great hand like this a few months ago involving KK, I think it was a 55 too. I love this kind of stuff. There's a thread that I believe originated in either HSNL or NVG or BBV, who knows really, the "strasser" thread where the definition is when you are raised all in for less than you originally raised and you fold, or something like that. Basically like eff. stacks 500, you raise to 100 guy reraises to 400 and you shove, he folds. That was a funny thread, or at least had potential.
