hard work and natural ability

Why is it that I tend to prefer people perceive me as someone of great intelligence/natural ability and mediocre work ethic rather than one of great work ethic and mediocre intelligence/natural ability, despite the fact that I usually hold those with good work ethic in higher regard than those with exceptional natural ability? I don't know if this is typical, but I'm fairly certain I'm not the only one who feels this way.
