Default How often is the term \"professional poker player\" BS?

I was out at a club with a friend last week- a nice guy but pretty much a loser as far as any career prospects. Still lives with his parents. He's a typical casino poker player- decent but nothing special. I've taken more of his money than he's taken of mine.

Anyway, we were both talking to girls when suddenly I heard him blurt out "I'm a professional poker player." That was the last thing I was expecting to hear come flying out of his mouth, and I found it instantly hilarious. But I always try to be a good wingman, so I turned away to stifle my laughter. Except the girl I was talking to saw my face getting red trying not to laugh and then she started laughing. And then I couldn't help myself and me we were both convulsing with laughter. My friend was not happy- understandably - but it was one of those situations where I just couldn't help laughing.

It occurred to me later that being a "professional poker player" is the perfect cover for the slacker lifestyle. It's even got a little air of glamour to it. I wonder what percentage of people who claim to be pros actually make a reliable living solely at poker.
