[ QUOTE ]
A few things strike me as strange about this whole thing.

First - why is this Tom guy going after the guy he stole money from? Isn't that the dumbest thing you can do? So what if the guy hired someone to kill you - you started it by stealing his F-ing money.

Second - If Laak did try and have him killed why would you show up at the convention? Wouldn't you rather have Laak thinking you are dead so that he doesn't get another hitman? (presuming Laak did hire the first hitman to begin with)

Third - This is all over a drug deal that Tom made go bad because he stole money (Tom admits to that). If you steal 10k worth of wholesale black tar heroin (street value about 10x that amount maybe more) do you think that the guy is just going to write it off as a loss? Are you retarded? In my opinion Tom you are an idiot and deserve a swift kick in the nuts for the 30 minutes of my life I will never get back after all this.

I just want to know how Tom can justify that Phil Laak is the "bad guy" here when Tom was the one that screwed Laak?

[/ QUOTE ]

The reason you're getting confused is that Tom Grant hasn't supplied all the details coherently or cohesively, and those he has provided are scattered across the web.

Grant has a vendetta against Laak because he feels that the magnitude of Laak's response was unjustified.

Grant decided to rip-off Laak for the initial $15K, and even tried for an additional $10K. (It's not clear whether this really was a Thai government $10K religious artifacts fee, as Grant might have made this up -- in fact the entire story about the art imex cover business might be fabricated.)

At any rate, Laak went ballistic over the demand for an additional $10K and put a $15K down / $15K photo-deliverables contract out on Grant and Grant's wife. However the contract killer was a friend/foaf of Grant's and decided instead to keep the $15K and rat on Laak to Grant.

(It's clear to me that Grant probably set-up Laak in this matter as well: the contract killer was probably informed that Laak was enraged and contacted Laak in NYC by phone with an offer to kill Grant and his wife.)

On hearing that a hit had been put out on her, Grant's wife freaked and broke her leg so badly she is confined to a wheelchair for life (or maybe that's because of the MS she contracted later -- again, Grant's statements are unclear.) Grant holds Laak responsible for crippling his wife and as revenge wants to ruin Laak's life.

It just sounds like this guy needs to take some accountability for his own actions and quit trying to make Laak a scapegoat here. Because what it all comes down to is if the guy doesn't screw over Laak, Laak doesn't hire the hitman, and then wife doesn't break leg and all is well. To me it sounds like Tom is the "bad guy" in this situation. I just want to know how Tom can justify that Phil Laak is the "bad guy" here when Tom was the one that screwed Laak in the first place?
