Socialism FTW?

This is really a "gotcha" thread. For that, I apologize. But when I saw the headline I had to post it. So the thread doesn't blow up, can any liberal leaning poster explain to me where the "disconnect" is from socialist to progressive? I argued with a friend up in Mass. about this tons of times, and we keep getting to the fact that his value system is arbitrary and coercive, but "fair". He adamantly believes that fair is decidable by the body politic. I don't get it.

Edit: By disconnect, I mean, at what point do we decide that the loss of freedom isn't fair but leading us towards Eastern Germany rather than beautiful France? At what point does economically inefficient translate to corrupt governance? Etc.

IF the Soviet Union still existed, this would help reinforce the idea that the Democrats are soft on communism, a winning argument for Republicans campaigns for years.

But we have moved on.

Now, it only counts if a terrorist comes out to support you, proving you are weak on terrorism.

I keep waiting for some famous terrorist to come straight out and endorse somebody. Like a 5 minute video, full of nice sound bite one-liners. Hillary raised how much for her campaign? And it took at $20 tape + shipping to all come down? They'd be laughing in their caves.
