IRC = internet relay chat.

There are many IRC clients out there .. mIRC is probably the most used under windows: http://www.mirc.com/

IRC is old school but still has more people than any other "channel" based chat... often developer chats for games, etc. are held in IRC channels as well so it has some good uses.

I was just about to suggest a mIRC channel as well since it lets you bring a topic up and discuss it in real time without worrying about bothering someone or remembering what stakes each person on your list plays, etc.

I think an IRC channel is a good idea; somebody who has an idea about all the scripts and bots you need to run to prevent takeover would do good to start it.

you can do group chats on aim, someone can start a chat and then they (and other people in the chat?) can invite others.
