Default RIP Tommy Makem

Tommy Makem has died. Among my earliest memories is my grandfather, father, and uncles performing a beer-soaked sing along to "the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" at some Irish celebration.

I love Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers. Who's left...? Just Liam I think.

The Clancy/Makem albums were a fixture of my childhood as well.

I remember various stories of their being asked by the SFPD to play very non-controversial sets during performances in the 60's and 70's. I'm told that IRA bagmen would work the crowds with predictable success.

At least we can be thankful that the Ireland of today is a much different place than when he was born.
