Default If you ran the poker room...

What would you do?

It is my perception that the pool of NL players in the Midwest is drying up. For the purpose of this discussion, let's assume I am right.

I think most of my local Poker Rooms are headed for trouble but I am not sure I am right and I am not sure what should be done, if I am.

Small Stakes NL is dominating the market at the moment. If you go to a card room, there will be multiple tables of NL and few if any limit games and probably few if any tables that aren't Holdem.

Are the cardrooms making a mistake spreading mostly NL by allowing the fish to bust too quickly or should they just keep opening more NL tables and let the market dictate what is spread?

Is it better for long term business to restrict the number of NL games and try to encorage people to play something other than NL Holdem or should they let them play what they want?

Since I have started the RV travel to play I have noticed less NL the past year in the mid-west and south.
I have also noticed less higher no-limit games and more 1/2 no-limit games. I have also seen no-limit players heading back to the limit world. While this is hard to see in Las vegas it is still happening here just at a smaller scale.
I think places such as Tunica would be well served to limit the number of no-limit games because of the lower tourist count and higher local play.
I am heading to Biloxi Monday for a few weeks of play (not sure what I will find as far as games) before heading up to Tunica again. I would not be surprised to find more limit games this time up.

The problems card rooms face when they limit the number of nlhe tables is that if there are other casinos within 2 hours drive, they risk losing business from poker players who don't want to wait several hours to play. This would seem to be a bigger problem for rooms with less than 30 tables. Card rooms could try offering promotional rakes for limit non-holdem games if they want to try and diversify the fish. The fundamental question is how many players of nlhe in cardrooms are action junkies that just want to say allin. These players probably wont be kept interested by anything other than nlhe or maybe spread limit.

The problem is that many of the NL players simply won't play limit. If you don'toffer NL they will go elsewhere or set up a home game.

I hear it all the time when a NL player sits in a limit game to wait for a NL seat "This isn't poker, you can't protect a hand, you can't make a move, ...."

That is great, but if that is the case I suspect its because of player preference and not something a cardroom was able to impose on the players.

Card rooms should spread whatever limit and game that the most players will play while still giving them a profit for spreading the game.

If that's NL, then so be it.

As for "Are the cardrooms making a mistake spreading mostly NL by allowing the fish to bust too quickly," I think bad players bust out no matter what game they play. I've seen some bad limit players zip through their stack pretty fast. Maybe not in one hand, but fast enough.

Yeah, it does seem that the NL player pool is drying up a bit. However, finding a good game is still relatively easy.

If I ran the poker room I would:
* make sure I had competent dealers
* offer tornaments with low($30), med($50-$100), and higher ($150+) buy-ins
* run promotions offering extra starting chips for playing ring prior to the start of tournies
* sread the games and structures that customers requested.
i.e. NL,PL,FL or Omaha, Stud, Chinese poker, etc.
* Offer a reward system of some sort to reward the regulars for playing every day, etc.

The most important thing a poker room can do for its player base is listen to its customers. Here in Oklahoma, its all indian casinos and most of the Poker room managers actually didn't even know how to play poker when they became the manager of their room. I get very frustated with how some of the local rooms (within 80 miles of my home) are run but they Indians have a monopoly so I just do the best I can with the situation.

Which is why in my perfect world I would escort the player to a PLO table and tell him its texas hold'em with twice the cards.

If I ran a poker room I'd bump up the rake to 7 or 8 dollars a hand an have a bunch more promotions targeted at weak, gambly players. Something like win a hand with 72 get $50. Try and cycle as much money as possible from winning players to losing players. I would run a poker room that I as a winning player would hate to play at. Good business and keeping winning players happy are often at odds with each other.

Why do people assume that if they are running a card room they can dictate what games people will play?

The reason the games are running at all is because that's what the people came to play. Card rooms are service providers, if they don't provide the service customers want they will just look somewhere else to play.
