Default 10NL - 77 UTG vs. BB

Villain is 77/31/1.3 but seems to be a somewhat smart player.

Ultimate Bet No-Limit Hold'em, $.10 BB (6 handed) Ultimate Bet Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: 2+2 Forums)

CO ($10)
Button ($9.70)
SB ($7.63)
BB ($36)
Hero ($10)
MP ($15.02)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with 7[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 7[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img].
Hero raises to $0.35, MP calls $0.35, 2 folds, SB calls $0.30, 1 fold.

Flop: ($1.15) 4[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (3 players)
SB bets $0.55, Hero calls $0.55, MP folds.

Now I know weak leads are usually weak hands, but I froze and just called to see what he would do on the turn.

Turn: ($2.25) 9[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 players)
SB checks, Hero checks.

I know this is terrible, but I would like some different logical reasons to why it is bad so I do not do this again.

You bet here for 2 reasons:
1) There's a good chance have the best hand, and you want to avoid giving your opponent a free card to beat you.
2) Information - if you check the turn, villain will invariably fire on the river and you won't know what to do.

Betting the turn also charges draws to see a river card, makes it much more likely that you get a free showdown (which you would like), and folds out hands like Q8 that are beating you but too afraid to call your bet. Finally, it lets you set your own price, rather than having to deal with whatever price your opponent charges you on the river.

Fold the flop. You have a player acting behind you and it could quite expensive to get to showdown. As played, I agree with others on betting the turn.
