You know, it might be VS1 now that I think about it, don't have the cert with me. I know the color is D or E. I do have a friend in the business, though.

[/ QUOTE ] yeah I'm not a gemologist or anything but as I recall from my engagement ring shopping I went to 10 or so different places and NEVER saw anything 1.7 carats with D or E color and in the VSI or VVSI range under 20,000. those were loose diamonds too, no setting.

Now I'm curious too, I'll look for the cert when I get home. I'm not really far off, though, of that I'm sure. I'll post when I find it.
If you were shopping retail or these were marked prices that would have a lot to do with it, too. I paid exactly what my friend got it for wholesale, no markup.

I bought her ring in Aruba for 10K. I got a free gold band in the deal.
So 10,000/0. It was appraised way higher (like 2.5x) back here, but I have come to realize that higher appraisals are just a way of ripping people off so that they will have to pay higher insurance premiums.

[/ QUOTE ] I have this unspoken notion of 1)losing ring, 2)claiming insurance money, 3)going to aruba and buying same ring, 4)pocketing difference in cash. but probably get nailed again by higher premiums or some such.
