A couple who live 4 houses down from me were arrested a few weeks ago for kidnapping a homeless man, imprisonning him in their shed for 4 months, and then murdering him. (i don't know how they murdered him). Link

18/17/16 whatever is such an arbitrary age. If some 30 y.o. guy is having consensual sex with a 16 y.o. and in his state it's illegal, yet in the next state over it's legal, what makes it so bad? He just got reamed by a law that nitpicks about someone's age rather than some actual bad thing that occured. If it's so clear what age is right or wrong then why do different states have different ages? Why do different countries have different laws regarding this kind of thing? Murder is obviously bad. "Statutory rape" is not.

Now if we're talking porn of 10 year olds then I think that's a clear crime.

Of course the specific age is arbitrary. How else do you write law? You can't write a law book that just says, "Don't do bad stuff," because then everyone will take their own interpretation of what is bad and what is not. You can't just say, "Don't take advantage of young people sexually," because then some dude is going to argue 15 is not too young then some other dude is going to say 14 is not too young and ...

The problem with "fuzzy but reasonable" is that it does NOT work for a whole city/state/country. People will argue about it in unreasonable ways. So you need something explicit for the sake of clarity, even if the exact line might be arbitrary. I see absolutely nothing wrong with this - in fact, anything else would be impractical.

And, the thing is, no one is saying it's "so clear what age is right or wrong" (quoted). Rather, it's clear what age is LEGAL or ILLEGAL. And, that MUST be clear, or else everyone will be arguing different things and you have a huge mess.

Nicholas Ribich faces four charges for allegedly kidnapping Canadian Forces Capt. Patrick Rechner and Capt. Oldrich Zidlik of the Czech Republic on May 26, 1995 during the Bosnia-Herzegovenia conflict...Televised images of Rechner in handcuffs were broadcast around the world in 1995 as NATO planes bombed Serb positions in Bosnia. He was also attached to a lightning rod in the middle of an ammunition dump. It is believed he was held as insurance against further bombing.

Ribich, the 28-year-old Canadian-born son of a Yugoslav-born father, left Canada in 1995, allegedly to join Serb forces in Bosnia.

I ran from a cop on a horse one time. I was drunk and ran a light outside a music festival and he came galloping after me and I took off. The traffic was real tight and I kept turning corners and I would see him turn behind me. Scariest [censored] in my life. I had a friend with me who was absolutely losing it in the passenger seat. Got away though. Just made me think of it. Great memory.

I had a friend arrested for murder about 5 years ago. I waited tables with him. He was about 23. Some guy grabbed his girfriend's ass at a bar and he followed him home and beat him senseless with a baseball bat. Guy died in the hospital a few days later. Took them a month to pin it on him. He's doing 30 now.

The problem is people are saying that. I have no issue with assigning some age to make it a crime. I have an issue with lumping all sex offenders together or all "child" porn together as if what they did was equally bad.
