Default Can i use my laptop as my base computer that connects to internet?

I have a desktop and I have Verizon online Dsl i use. I also have a laptop that i go online in using my wireless router but dont use it anymore because it has weak connection whenever i move away from it. Its a d-links router.

Instead of my desktop being the base computer connected to my verizon DSL... not sure if i m phrasing it right, can i have my laptop use the verizon dsl instead? I know that if i can, i have to have wires connected to my laptop which is fine for me. But can i do this? Or do laptops all must connect to the internet through wireless only??

uh, what is the question? you want to wire your laptop into the router? go right ahead, no reason you can't. Most routers can handle more than one ethernet connection so I don't think you'd have to disconnect the other computer, but who knows.

you should have a lan card in your laptop, most do. If not you can add one.

Get a wireless range extender though.

i dont have a wireless router anymore. I gave it back to someone because they wanted it back and also the connection wasnt that good.

I just want to use my laptop now with my verizon dsl modem that i have. I don't really care about my desktop any more. I just want to use my laptop with my verizon dsl.

Am i getting a bit confusing?

If you have a plain DSL modem, with only one ethernet connection, you will probably need a router, if you want to connect both your laptop and a desktop to the internet. If you have a DSL gateway, which has multiple ethernet connections, and is actually a combination of a DSL modem and a router, all you need to do is plug your laptop into it with an ethernet cable. If you only want to connect one computer at a time, unplug your desktop from the modem and plug in your laptop.

whats a dsl gateway? I just want to connect one computer at a time... actually i just want to connect my laptop only and put the desktop aside unless i need it for an emergency.

Assuming i have a dell dimension laptop and verizon online dsl modem, can i do this?

I am sort of confused with your response

ty.

If you just want to connect one computer at a time, unplug the cable that goes from your DSL modem to your desktop machine from your desktop machine, find a connection on your laptop that it will fit into, and plug it into your laptop.

If after doing this, you can't access the internet from your laptop, hire a technician, or ask a friend who is not completely clueless about computers to set it up for you. Depending on how your laptop is configured, there is a good chance that it will just work after you connect it to the DSL modem.

Hey Cored i did what you said about unpluging the cable... the ethernet cable that goes from my DSL model to my desktop and plugging it into a slot in my laptop.

However, i dont find a connection when i do this. Moreover, the light doesnt turn on in the Ethernet in my Dsl modem when i plug it into my laptop. It normally has all the lights turned on... power, ethernet, DSL and internet but only the ethernet light doesn't turn on.

??

Can you help? ty.
