Re: I-70 or I-40 to Vegas?
d10:
do them both, that's what I did. people saying Route 40 is boring are out of their minds - well, at least from OKC to Kingman it wasn't that boring. Route 40 is also a lot faster IMO - much easier to see police radaring at all points. |

Re: I-70 or I-40 to Vegas?
i've done both and preferred I-40. if you haven't seen desert landscape or been through some of those national parks, it's fantastic. both are pretty flat once you leave TN.
you could always go out one way and return the other. if you have a chance to take your time going back, then go OUT on I-40 and go back through southern utah, check out some of the parks there and hop on 70 when you're done. definitely the most 'must see' area for me out there - arches, zion, bryce canyon. have fun. |

Re: I-70 or I-40 to Vegas?
Avoid I70 as there is construction in the Glenwood Canyon. PM me if you would like some alternate mountain routes that would detour around Glenwood.

Re: I-70 or I-40 to Vegas?
Drove from Vegas to Philly via I-70 last summer. It sucked. I have never been on I-40, but I'd say take that one.

Re: I-70 or I-40 to Vegas?
This thread has been done to death. I think the general consensus is if you're looking for scenery take I-70. If you're looking for speed, take I-40.
[ QUOTE ] I'm driving from Omaha to Grand Junction today. (through Nebraska and 80% of Colorado) When do I pick up the hour? [/ QUOTE ] This is easily checked, but I think it's right in the middle of Nebraska somewhere. d10, whichever route you take I challenge you to drive on the shoulder the whole way there. Re: I-70 or I-40 to Vegas?
If you go 40 you can see Graceland and Hoover Dam.
I may be wrong but I think you can hit more casinos on or just off of 40 than you can on 70. GS |

Re: I-70 or I-40 to Vegas?
[ QUOTE ]
Yeah I expect Kansas to suck. But it should be cool once I get to Colorado right? [/ QUOTE ] I guess I'm weird because I liked Kansas. The grasslands are quite beautiful in the late afternoon sun if you can time it just right. You're going straight through right? I've made the trip from St. Louis to southern Colorado straight through, and I left in the late afternoon and drove 19 hours to come into the Rockies in the morning. So I drove through Kansas and eastern Colorado on the way out at night. If you're going to drive at night you're gonna miss the scenery anyway, so plan for whatever parts you figure will be boring to be your night driving. Oh, and this was I-70. |
