HOMM2 is my all-time favorite, awesome gameplay, although it probably wouldn't be visually stunning now like it was back in the day. HOMM3 is also good, unfortunately they seemed to have ruined the gameplay in subsequent editions.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the Warlords series, another solid entry, known for its tough AI. The best is probably Warlords 3 DLR. I'm not as crazy about Warlords 4.

HOMM2 was fantastic, my favorite along with the first XCOM. The graphics were never mind-blowing, but had an imaginative charm to them. I'd love to have this on my system again, especially with the auxiliary materials to keep it figured out.

Was I the only who LOVED Sid Meier's Colonization game? I wonder why it hasn't been updated even once since the original.

Also, I think Alpha Centauri was the best of Civilization games, except that it had one bug in that the Eco-crazies were overpowered.

The Total War games, while great, are not turn-based. The larger campaign is turn-based, but the battles are real-time. (Not the kind of real-time where you need the twitch reflexes of a 14-year old with a Mountain Dew IV drip, but real-time nonetheless, but with the ability to pause the action and issue orders, then resume the battle.)

Colonization was fun... that come out like 10 years ago, right?

Nothing like managing a bustling economy of tobacco and cotton.
