I think those were real-time. Real-time is when things are going on constantly. You can sometimes slow down or speed up, but you can't pause. You have to quickly tell your units to do whatever they need to do. Success in multi-player RTS games generally comes from mouse and keyboard efficiency. Examples are Warcraft and Starcraft.

In turn-based you can take your sweet time to tell one/multiple/all units what to do, then press a button and they do it. It's like chess. Examples are X-Com and Advance Wars.

I still play the hell out of Civ 2. It would be hard to convince me it isn't the best.

The logic used in any attempt to convince you would be highly flawed anyway, since it is the best.

Civ 4 might be better...

Also, Civ 2 didn't have the ridiculously cool thing at the end where after the game ended it would show a map of the world with the territory controlled by each civilization outlined. My favorite part of finishing a game would be watching my civilization slowly taking over the world on the map. Then in Civ 2 they took that out, wtf? I think it's back in the newer ones though, thank god.

Good ones mentioned throughout this thread. Another one every PC gamer should be familiar with is Fallout/Fallout 2. While labeled a futuristic RPG it has a pretty significant aspect of strategy, including turn-based action during the mission/action sequences. I'm sure the graphics would look dated today but awesome in its gameplay and use of humor.

Civ 4 (with Warlords expansion) is the best game I've ever played.

How long does it take to play a game of Civ 1 or 2? Are there difficulty levels?

Dominions 3.

This is an indy game made by a two man team. It is feckin awesome. thousands of units, thoudands of spells thousands of items, thousands of combos and strategies. Multiplayer is one of the deepest richest fun experiences you can have on a PC.

Graphics are circa 1995 but if you can get past this the game engine and playability out shine other TBS games hands down.Gal Civ 2 for example can not hold a candle to this.
