I was playing pok.er (not sure if that word is censored on this site so I'm circumventing the filter) at the time and didn't notice him warming up repeatedly. I busted out and went home for the last inning or two. So I was unaware that his arm may have been a little dead. I just thought he was old.

The "closer" should be the best reliever and should pitch in high-leverage situations, not only save situations, Hoffman should have come in after Bell.

[/ QUOTE ]
I know less about baseball than anyone in this forum and even I understand this. So do most managers obviously, I see closers trotted out all the time with the game tied in the ninth and beyond. Had they not taken the lead Hoffman may never have gotten into the game, which is about as bad as La Russa leaving Pujols on the bench at the end of the all-star game.

I agree Hoffman shoulda come in earlier. Durron and I were chatting about it, is anyone else suprised Corpas didn't pitch another inning?

Roger Clemens

"Through the end of 2006, Clemens's total postseason record is 12-8 in 33 starts, with a 3.66 ERA. Clemens' World Series record is 3-0 in 8 starts, with an ERA of 2.37."

He also throws bats pretty well.

[/ QUOTE ]

He thought it was the ball!

which always left me wanting to ask 2 questions:

1. you thought half of a baseball bat was the ball?

2. even if it was the ball, why throw it at Piazza? you can't get him out that way any more, you know...

That's not fair over the long haul. He threw a one hitter in the World Series the year the Braves won it.

I was always surprised that Clemens didn't get run on that bat-throwing incident. I guess he was just too big of a name in too big of a situation. Picking up a shard of a bat and chucking it at the batter. Because you thought it was a ball. A piece of a bat. Sharp edge. Could embed itself in Piazza's calf in LOL fashion. Looks like a ball. Which he should be throwing to first, not at the batter, this isn't dodgeball, Donny. W.T.F...

Circa 2000 Clemens was on the Vince Young, mini-Ditka level and could not be touched. All he did was just win.

What about Saito in LA?

[/ QUOTE ]

He doesn't play in the AL East, so I've never heard of him.

I guess I'll be sitting out the remainder of this conversation.

But at least grant me my point that it's foolish to design your gameplan around getting your Closer in there in the 9th, if you don't have a guy who can reliably pitch one scoreless inning.

Most of Bob Wickman's "saves" look like this:

1 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 0 K, save!

Not sure about the most unclutch, but I just wanted to say Jorge "I only have a job cuz I throw hard" Julio is the worst pitcher to step on a mound. Yes he is worse than BH Kim and Josh Towers.

Having him warm up whenever the Padres had a chance to take the lead was asinine. Arm was dead by the time he finally got into the game 4 innings after he should have been pitching.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is just asinine. Anyone think that his warming up twice (3 times?) before coming in makes his arm dead knows nothing about pitching or how much these gus actually throw day in and day out.
