Default Wendover?

Planning a trip to gamble with my dad, and he's heard about this Wendover place and is interested, mainly because dad is cheap and this place is a lot cheaper than vegas. Also we don't really do much show stuff anyway, sticking to eating and gambling.

In that regard, how is the poker there, where would you recommend staying, etc.

Where are you coming from? Wendover is in the middle of nowhere. You would probably have to fly in to Salt Lake and drive 2 hours across the desert. Haven't played poker there, but the place is a hole. Plenty of cheap options in Vegas. Try downtown and off the strip where the locals go.

We can fly direct through a charter service...I think its like $150 bucks or so, and I think that might even include the room, not sure for how many nights though. They have charters into there with a group called Max-air.

i have drivien through Wendover a few times but never stopped to play. From the looks of it I would say that the games probably aren't that great but who knows.
BTW, when are you planning this trip. I'm going to be driving through there again in early march

Only thing to do in Wendover is gamble. It really is out in the middle of no where. 4 main casinos. I always play poker at the Rainbow. It has the biggest Poker Room. There are approx 20 tables. Usually there are a bunch of 2-5 tables and a few 10/20 tables. A few NL games also. They offer regular tournaments too.

The casinos located in Wendover are the Rainbow, Peppermill, Stateline Nugget, Montego Bay and the Red Garter.

Stateline Nugget and Montego Bay both have small poker rooms (~6 tables) and spread low limit Holdem (I haven't been to the Nugget, Montego was doing a 1-5 sread limit Holdem game last time I was there. I believe they both run some low limit tourneys on the weekends.

The Rainbow has the largest poker room in Wendover. They run several 1-5 spread limit HE games with $1/$2 blinds and a full kill to a structured $5/$10 game. Occasionally a $5/$10 game will run, and there is usually either a $10/20 half kill or a $15/30 game going. They also usually have a couple of NL games going (I believe they are $2/$5 blinds with a $100 min $500 max buyin). There is often a $4/$8 O8 game going (I believe with a kill). There used to always be some $1/$5 spread limit stud games going, but I think these are rare now. There are BBJ's for HE and O8.

There is a LHE tournament on Friday night (I believe it is $25 + rebuys and add on), and NLHE tournament on Sunday afternoons and Monday nights.

The cheapest rooms are probably at the Red Garter (smallest of the casinos, next door to the Rainbow), although none are overly expensive. There is a free shuttle between Peppermill, Rainbow and Montego Bay as they are all owned by Peppermill (the distance from Red Garter to Stateline which encompasses all the casinos can't be much more than a mile or so).

Hope that helps.

Bendover is the most depressing place I've ever been to gamble. It was so bad that I didn't even enjoy the depressing aspect of it. Go somewhere else to gamble, unless you like misery.

What did you find depressing? The post-apocalyptic setting, or the hordes of retired couples from Salt Lake that drive 2hrs each way every weekend to blow their kids inheritance at table games and slots every weekend?

I frequent Wendover because it's the closest (~120 miles) place with legal cardrooms to SLC. The poker rooms (especially Rainbow) are not that bad, but compared to Vegas (or LA/San Francisco/etc.) there is no comparison. Really not much to do other than gamble, and pretty bleak surroundings. Don't know that it's any worse than places like Elko or Mesquite, but Vegas definately blows it away.

i'm going to do everything in my power to convince pops to go to vegas....this sounds quite lame.

Are the blackjack tables low or hi limit? My dad is a cheapass and likes to play $2-$3 blackjack...i know we can find this in some of the vegas casinos (albeit the crappier ones). If Wendover had only $5 or $10 blackjack tables this might help my argument.
