I remember (sort of) the first hand hold-em hand I ever played. I was a draw and lowball player, hold'em being illegal in California, as it apparently qualified as "stud-horse" poker. Then the rules were changed and so we had hold-em.

Knowing nothing about the game, I went to try some 3-6. First hand, in my big blind, there is one limper and the small blind folds. I check my option with Q-J. Flop comes Q-Q-J. Pretty good flop for me. I notice they take some chips out of the pot for the drop as I bet. My opponent calls. Turn is a J. I bet, he calls. River is a blank, I bet, he calls, I show, and he shows a superbly played Q-6 and we chop the pot.

When they divide up the pot, I notice that I have less than I had at the beginning, the drop being bigger than the small blind we chopped up.

So I flopped the nut full house, didn't lose the pot, and lost money.

Another day in paradise.

A possible solution that i would like to see is to changed all of the "mid-high" stake games to time charge. Like at Commerce, to include all the games in the ballroom to a time charge instead of rake. Not just the 60/120, but the 20-40, 30-60 (stud), 40-80. Maybe even the 5/10 NL in the main room.

Generally the players balk at paying a high enough time charge to make it revenue neutral for the casino to switch back to a time charge.

Why is the LA County Sheriff so powerful in all of this? I thought casinos were state-regulated.

[/ QUOTE ]

Rick,

Thats a fantastic question.

HP is under Inglewood Police.
Normandie and Hustler are under the Gardena Police Control
The Bike is City of Bell Gardens Police.

Commerce is controlled by LA County.

Im not sure about the police departments for CP/ HG and Club Caribbe.

[/ QUOTE ]

For CP at least in my experience I had to go to the LA sheriff's office to get my badge. So I imagine it falls under thier jurisdiction. HG I would imagine is the same thing. Caribe would fall under the same protection as the Bike seeing as how its right down the road.

This is incorrect. The Bike is in Bell Gardens; Caribe is not.

Does Cudahy have its own police dept that handles that sort of thing?

Generally, inside LA County things have always been enforced more strictly. For example, in 1995 Hollywood Park tried a "live" button drop (drop counted toward a call or raise) but when the LA Sheriff came back from vacation he made it a dead button drop.

[/ QUOTE ]

They have a live button drop in the 3/6 now at HP. Either that or the dealer let me short the pot.

Crystal Park is horrible. I used to work there, and the pots can be so small due to all the props who give no action. They have tons of props 24/7 in that place. Be careful playing there, I have seen a lot of crooked things go down that you wouldn't see anywhere else. Re-buy dumping, collusion teams, and more goes down there. Don't waste your time, drive 10 minutes more to The Bike or Hustler.

The owners hate time charge, especially when they see the lengths players went to avoid it. Randy is also right regarding the revenue neutral aspects.

Great time charge avoidance antics were hilariously described in some old rec.gambling.poker threads by Speed Racer (or Speed Racer under another alias). I'd post a link if I wasn't so tired.
