Your doctor was covering his ass. 3 months is more than enough time. I first tested sterile after 2.

I tested once at 2-3 months when the doc said it was OK to sex my wife, but then I had to test again at 1 year to make sure my tubes hadn't grown back together, which apparently happens a small percentage of the time.
