The comparision between live and online is interesting. IMO I think to be good at live, you should play both FR and 6-max online, because knowing how and when to switch gears is SOOO profitable in a live game.

I played 6-max for most of the first 1/2 of this year. The variance is gross.

Try limit if you want gross variance.

Mathematically speaking, limit has a lower standard deviation.

I play both, but my long term winrate at six max is about double what it is at full ring. I play full ring whenever I feel like turning off my mind and just going on autopilot 9+ tabling while watching TV, this might be the reason why the winrate is so much different.

The play at six max is much worse, and it's fun to be able to value bet tp/tk on the turn without it feeling like a bluff. The play at full ring is so straight forward though that it's pretty easy to make the right choices most of the time and feel good about it, even if it's not as profitable.

This month I won a prop bet which required me to play 25k hands of 600NL fr...what a huge joke...

25,001 hands of 600nl fr $10,336.55 3.45bb/100

now

22,097 hands of 600nl 6max? how about: $17,059.75 6.43bb/100

$7k more for 3k hands less? what a huge joke full ring is...

[/ QUOTE ]

23000 hands 50FRNL 8.4ptbb/100
24500 hands 50FRNL 0.02ptbb/100

what a joke poker is...

I think 6 max is easier. That being said, there are way more regs. I was at a table of 25 6 max the other day and all 5 of my villains were talking about their PT stats. Even at 50NL FR (mabey 100NL fr?) You wont find a table full of Hud users.

i've studied both and always prefer a full table but i will sit at a shorthanded game. lately most of the success has come from a full game that goes shorthanded for a time...i believe i can adjust my strategy a little quicker than my opponents realize

with full ring i usually play for the big hand all-in pot...but in shorthanded, i grind away with blind steals and re-steals on the flop/turn

play both and study both as that full ring game will go shorthanded often

Jesus, I guess because I hate money. Hadnt really played much of this so I went and played an hour of it today, 4 tabling at 25NL. I managed to produce a modest 73 ptbb/100.

Yeah, 73. I know, I know, small sample size, etc etc.

But 73, damn.

for all of you guys who deviate from the full ring stereotypes of nut-peddling, playing ultra-tight styles, having difficulty valuebetting thinly, etc., you will almost certainly enjoy 6max more.

if you are a good player, you profit because you make decisions better than your opponents. being able to play more hands against opponents over whom you have an edge is a huge advantage! if you enjoy "poker" you will really enjoy shorthanded play.

a bit about me:
i have played 6max mostly exclusively since may 2006 (i have probably logged <100 hands of full ring NLHE in that span). i had played FR online between december 2005 and then and hadn't really played poker prior, except occasionally live. when i began playing online, full ring seemed like the natural setting: live poker was nine-handed, so why wouldn't i play the game i knew?

i pretty much crushed online FR during that time, so i saw little reason to try anything else. i don't have those databases anymore, but IIRC i was ~10ptbb winner lifetime at 100 and 200nl on party playing about 16/9. maulik, a college friend and 2+2er, had been nagging me to try 6max the whole time, and i finally did.

everything seemed insane. people were playing a ton of hands. people never folded. people would bet as soon as you checked. my god, this was insane! they didn't always have sets, did they?

i actually broke even for pretty much an entire month while i tried to figure things out. i was determined to learn to play shorthanded because it was interesting, challenging and seemingly very profitable. i could tell people were playing exploitably but i did not know 1) how to exploit their play adequately 2) how to avoid playing so exploitably myself!

in july, things skyrocketed. i started "getting it" and i began to win like nuts. i probably won close to 70 buyins at 100nl that month on party poker playing a few hours daily. yes, this was party poker pre-UIGEA, but these were still remarkable results. i began playing 200nl and was a lifetime 16ptbb winner there for 50-60k hands before finally jumping to 2/4 and 3/6. then, they took my baby away

i've rambled, but i hope this entertains and provides some insight into the 6max v full ring debate for you guys.

Thanks Terp - interesting post. What do you play now if you don't mind me asking - still 2/4 and 3/6?

I play 100 and 200NL. I had about 30k profitable hands at 6max 200NL pre legislation and a few losing sessions thereafter. Currently grinding out 10k 50NL hands before moving up, but sadly am 8 buyins down, so may have to stay put a while.

I saw a post in the zoo about PS raising the max tables to 24 or something.

I haven't played FR in forever but decided to nit it up for a bit.

I played an hour and ran 27/18 (prob too loose for FR).

I couldn't believe how passive those guys were.

Just calling with sets on flush draw boards, going into call-down mode with two pair, never betting less than top pair on the turn.

No one defended their blinds and I only got 3bet by premiums.

I only ran into one guy who could stand the heat with top pair.

This is prob more typical of FR fish and not you 2p2ers.
