I don't know that this should count, since the first season of The Wire was still very, very good, but i think it's easily the worst season of The Wire. D'angelo and Wallace are both incredible (Larry Gilliard Jr is the best actor The Wire has ever had) and the season has moments of pure brilliance, but most of the other characters feel like charicatures (to be fair, this may just be in comparison to their characterization in later seasons) and overall it's got a slightly clumsy feel to it.

i was getting the carnivale dvd's on netflix at the same time i was getting the wire dvd's. the wire just trumped carnivale for me and i gave up about halfway through the first season so i could just get the next wire disc faster.

Was Carnivale cancelled? I've never seen an episode, but from what I've heard it's one of those shows with 'deep mysteries' that build each ep. Is it even still watching if you don't get any resolution on these things?

I just finished season 2 last night (watched both seasons 1 & 2 from Netflix over the last 3 weeks) and most stuff was resolved at the end. They did sort of leave a couple things hanging and left it open to a third season but I felt it worked well as a series finale.
