Default FW 1-2 NL, continued. . .

Just wanted to follow up a post from a few days ago with a rediculous hand from the 1-2NL game last night.

There were two fellas at the table who had been raising to 12 or 16 or 22 preflop with basically any two hands (possible explaining EP's decision to limp). As for the rationale for his flop play . . .

Hand 1:

Fold, Fold, EP Calls $2, Fold, CO Calls $2, Button Folds, SB Calls $1, BB Checks.

Flop ($8): 2 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 3 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 2 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

SB Checks
BB Checks
MP BETS $50
CO Folds,
SB Reraises (All-in) 279 more
BB Folds
MP thinks, and thinks, and eventually counts out 279 dollars, and pushes it into the pot.

MP Shows QQ, SB Shows 2-8o

Turn ($666, player All-in) 8 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]
River 6 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

333 BB Pot shipped to SB.

WTF? Do people normally fire $50 bets into $8 pots at FW??

Not normally, but he had to protect his big pocket pair, you know?

It's not uncommon.

Smells like "Oh [censored], one of these donkeys was supposed to raise preflop...now I'll have to blow them out of my pot."

Sounds like fairly standard fair at pretty much any poker table (bet amounts notwithstanding). This is a simple Small Blind Special situation, and the QQ guy got what he deserved for not raising PF.

I see bizarre overbets at least once every time I play

I was just talking to my cousin on my lunch break, about bet sizes at this game. I haven't played it yet, but he has. He confirmed that you see a lot of strange bets in relation to the pot size. He was telling me of people coming in for $25 bets with no limpers before them.

So - is this just a FW thing at this particular game, or is it common in most NL cash games to see flop bets of over 6X the pot and 12XBB PF bets??

FW is almost always insanely huge bets preflop and embarassingly small bets (think less than 1/4 often) postflop.

some of the worst, most superstitious, ill-informed, impatient poker players are playing casino SSNL. Understand your opponent's psychology: I've seen the 12xBB preflop raises with AA and the guy is *happy* to "win a small pot rather than lose a big one". (It ruins someone's day to get aces cracked even though they swear aces never win)

The oversized preflop raise is common and usually a standard $15 raise gets a couple callers (it's the price to see the flop, people accept that). The ridiculous postflop bet is not as often seen, but it's usually of the "tired of getting sucked out; protecting my top pair/overpair" variety as seen here. The astute Small blind special recognized that and made an otherwise ridiculous re-raise all-in.
