This thread has been done a LOT.

Short and sweet: For around $1000, I think a plasma is a better bet than an LCD. Panasonic is usually the best bang-for-the-buck brand here.

If you want to go LCD, Samsung seems to be the sweet spot - very close to Sony's quality but considerably cheaper. If you go LCD you might as well go 1080p - it's not much more expensive.

Asofel just showed me a 50" plasma (pioneer I think) on clearance for like $1300 - so you can definitely find some good deals if you dig.

can you send me the link for the 50" plasma on clearance because if it is a Pioneer (I doubt it), then it is pretty much a steal.

Hmm.. I think it was actually a Panasonic that was on sale (still a great brand name).

Make sure you check slickdeals.net - they will basically post every good price or potential deal that exists.

Using that site I found a 42" Hitachi 1080i for $820 about a month ago.

Go to AVS Forum for all sorts of information and buying guides -- they have recommendations for every price point.

I searched their Plasma TVs forum and found a Panasonic 50" that I bought back in March and it rocks!!!

Most of the people that hang out on the AVS Forum are really knowledgeable and there is a ton of information there to help you make a decision on what you want.

50" Samsung 720p Plasma

What do you guys think about this model? Is $1600 a pretty good price for it? I realize 720p is out of date now, but there is no way that 1080p can be worth an extra grand right? I've read up a little bit and most seem to think the difference isnt really that noticable. Can any of you TV guys weigh in here.

HH Gregg also has a 50" 720p Panasonic for the same price.

Depends how many things you plan on hooking up to it..

Here is a 42" Vizio 1080p LCD that costs the same thing with better specs for picture but has two less HDMI inputs

If you have a ton of devices to hook into it I'd want more HDMI inputs but I'd rather watch the Vizio..

With that said I have a 32" Westinghouse lcd that I really like.. I got it on black Friday for a sick price though..

FWIW I bought this Toshiba 42" LCD from Amazon.com and I'm very happy with it so far. (I also paid $1600 about 3 months ago, down to $1299 now).

I'd definitely go with 1080p if you're getting a screen 42" or larger. It might not make a huge difference with HD channels (most max out at 1080i anyway), but eventually you may want to buy a HD-DVD or Blueray player, and you'll want the 1080p to see HD movies in the best possible quality.
