Detroit was and is the better team, but Miami played better in the last 6 games. I don't see why that's such a difficult concept people have been arguing about it for like a page and a half now.

[/ QUOTE ]

Because you are wrong. The last time Detroit was definitively better than Miami was December. Miami is now clearly and definitively the better team.

Detroit backers keep pointing to the regular season as their defense. Yes, 82>6, but these 6 are so much more important than those 82. You play those 82 to get in to the playoffs, to get the best possible seeding to make your path easiest, and to get homecourt advantage. You play those to build your team to peak into May/June.

Miami lost games in November with Shaq out. They lost games in December as a half-dozen new guys learned to play with Shaq. By February, Miami was clicking. They built the team to peak when needed. They smoked the Nets and earned extra rest. Then they overcame the homecourt advantage that the Pistons earned by winning in Detroit.

Nobody who ever played at a highly competitive level would think the way you appear to be. The Pistons were not sitting around last night thinking "hey, at least we were the better team..."

nobody said anything like this, what we're saying is that the Pistons are capable of playing much better than what they did this year in the playoffs.

BS, they played like [censored] in every round of the playoffs. All credit to the Heat for playing great basketball, but they didn't stop the Pistons, the Pistons stoped themselves in the last month or so.

Doesn't this prove that maybe they aren't as good as you think they are?

They won a title, they took the spurs to game 7, they're a great team, there's no doubt about that.
They have been playing like [censored], but great teams have bad periods too, for a ton of different reasons.

That was then, this is now.

If the 2006 Heat existed in 2004 and in 2005, they'd have two titles.

You guys can argue about this until you're dead, but it doesn't look like either side is going to budge. I'm a pretty big Pistons fan. Since I don't live in an area with major pro teams, I have an overall favorite team and one other favorite in the other conference. Detroit has been my east favorite for years.

They were not the better team this year. I thought they were, but they weren't. Blame their problems on whatever you like, but those problems were bad enough to make the Heat the better team. I think it's worth saying again that a big part of being the better team is playing up to your abilities when it matters the most.

As I see it, there are a couple of recent series/teams that can actually provide a somewhat interesting discussion:

Pistons - Heat LAST year
Mavs - Spurs this year

But not Heat - Pistons this year. Claim regular season wins all you like, but the regular season isn't that important in a discussion like this. So... the Pistons were good in the regular season but not in the playoffs. Should we just try to split the difference? No, I think we give more weight to the more important and telling part of the year.

I hope next year the Pistons rebound and become the best team in the East again, but they do need some work.
