i guess the main strategic difference is that you can play high only hands in stud8 [/ QUOTE ] I think this might be one of those counterintuitive thingys. It appears that you really need to have a low and back in to the high. I might be completely mistaken but it appears that big pairs, other than Aces, suck in this game. Probably because so many people are drawing to a low, they often back into a straight or a flush. I am still a member of the clueless majority so take all of this with a grain of salt. |

Re: Super System (NOT 2) question RE; Sklansky\'s Hi low split chapter.
In Sklansky On Poker, Sklansky stated that Hi Lo Split with a Declare was the most skillful poker game there was. He argued that in three way pots declaring high when the others went low or vice versa made it possible to gain half the pot with the worst hand. Not possible if there is a qualifier for low...

It would be interesting to analyse the same problem in Omaha 8/b also. |

Re: Super System (NOT 2) question RE; Sklansky\'s Hi low split chapter.
The escape table made my head hurt. Folding KK feels really weird to a limit Holdem player but after just a few hands, it appears to be correct.

[ QUOTE ] I have been playing some micro limit Stud 8 and the advice seems to be really good. [/ QUOTE ] Its bad advice if your playing Stud 8 with a qualifier, hi/low split without a qualifier is an antiquated game that is now only played in the Bellagio mix game and nowhere else (I believe it used to be played at Casino Arizona's mix, but they switched to Stud 8 as well). Your best bets for learning about S8 is Raz Z's high/low split book and Super System II's S8/b chapter written by Tod Brunson - one of the more solid sections of the book (its lacking a bit, but its solid none the less). I recommend that you read both, Tod's chapter first to get the basic concepts down pat, then Ray Z's book to understand the finer nuances of the game. [/ QUOTE ] *TT* -- Man, it seems like you just don't believe me. Stud hi-lo no qualifier ("any-any stud" in local parlance) is still played regularly in the 75-150 mix at Casino Arizona. This is because the game is played dealer's choice, with the game changing every half-hour, and many of the players enjoy any-any stud. I agree with what you said about books to read. --Nate |
