Default Synching email between clients. Is this possible?

My business' email address is akin to location@businessname.com and I have both my laptop and desktop configured to collect emails from this address. My desktop is running Outlook and my laptop Outlook Express.

I would like configure my settings so when I check my email on my laptop, that email will also be present on my desktop when I log on (and vice versa). Currently my messages are split between the two computers depending on which I used to log on at that time.

Just to complicate things...

I can configure gmail to collect emails from this address as well which would be great for when I'm on the road. Same problem - I want these emails to be visible on both the laptop and the desktop.

Is this even possible and if not is there an alternate solution? At the very least I would want all emails to be stored on the desktop regardless of where I initially received them.

Why don't you just use gmail as your client on both machines? If you want to have backups on the machines, you can export to outlook once a month.

Didn't think of this. Are there any disadvantages to using gmail as a client? I'm taking a look at it now and I'm going to play with the export function but this seems like it may be a good idea.

EDIT: Alright. Now I realize I'm not sure how to export to Outlook. I'm going to keep playing around with this but if there are any words of advice out there I'm all ears.

If this is a small/personal business, you might want to try hosting your email with Google Apps for Your Domain. See http://www.google.com/a/

You'd need administrative access to your domain to make the changes, but it's free. And it's easier than configuring replies to not look like they're coming from user@gmail.com. I think they cap it at 50 mail accounts per domain by default, but if you talk to them you may get more.

Check to see if your host has IMAP mail accounts. It does exactly what you're asking. Email are stored on the server, folders and all, and you're basically just syncing your clients when you connect.

if the above options don't work, you can also just go into the settings of outlook express on the laptop and tell it to keep a copy of your email on the server. If you don't find this easily, reply and I can elaborate.

when you check desktop mail, it will remove from server, and when you check laptop it wont. you can tell both computers to leave a copy on the server and it will always be the same. this has the potential to take up a lot of space, so i'd periodically download mail from the server after things are synched.
