When put in the necessary circumstances, I definitively agree with Chezlaw. Reminds me a bit of some military training. Put into very physically exhaustive and emotionally exhaustive situations with lots of sleep deprival you can be expected to learn things very quickly. These are not the most advanced subjects on earth, but the learning environment is so radically different from a classic academic environment that classic definitions of intelligence would fail to measure very important aspects of the necessary cognitive abilities.

By this rationale, intelligence (as understanding) is arguably different from being "smart" (able to adapt to one's environment), or being "clever" (able to creatively adapt).
