How do I ask someone to be a groomsmen?

I'm getting married in August and I need to offcially ask people to be groomsmen/ushers. I don't know how to formally do that, I want to send them something, not just call them up. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Do you need to ask OOT to help you ask your friend if he wants the last of the onion dip, too?

I just need to know if I can buy a generic card, or if i need to make something on my own, and if i need to make my own if anyone has any idea on the type of things I should say.

Just ask them. Don't send anything, you will give them some kind of gift at the wedding or rehersal to thank them.

The 2 times I was asked to be best man, it was on the phone or over IM. The time I was asked to be a groomsman, it was in person. Nothing was ever sent to me, it was just asked.

"Dude, whe've been close freinds forever; would you be my best man at my wedding?" said through clenched teeth because you just lost the bet you made 10 years ago regarding who'd get married first.
