Default Quickie Vegas NCAA TR (warning: 99.8% poker content)

I just wanted to post this up for anyone that might be going next weekend. Nothing exciting with strippers or high dollar restaurants. My only stripper encounter was Friday night, where I bought only one lap. I can't remember much about her or why I decided to leave so soon. I do remember looking for hookers at the Wynn bars when I went back to the room. Didn't find any. Yeah, I had a few beers beforehand.

WYNN - I played the most here because I was making the poker rate hours. Played the noon $540 tournament, and finished 19th out of 40, which is about standard for me. I did really crappy at the cash games. There were virtually no drunken gamboolers other than a group of bachelor party guys. They weren't all that drunk, were halfway decent players, and got a lot of good cards. I heard of some drunken donators at other casinos but I couldn't find any.

I played mostly 1/3 and a little 2/5. The 1/3 players were not horrible, but they underbet the pot all the time and called too much without getting the right price. Like they would bet $15 into a $60 pot with a flop of two suited. Unfortunately for me, it turned me into a calling station, because I was getting tons of EOSD's and flush draws. But none of them came in except for one oesd that completed someone else's flush.

CAESARS - I played the 7 pm tournament, 70 entries, paying the top 9. I finally did what they say you're supposed to do and did the re-buy at the start. It was nice having some chips to maneuver with, and I hung in fairly well until there were abouot 20 left. Then I went a little card dead, but just nursed my stack along, resolving not to make a stupid play if I could help it. Before I knew it, they broke us into 2 5-handed tables. I was severely short-stacked and sure to be Bubble Boy. Then, with t3500 and the blinds 1000-2000 and me UTG, inexplicably a guy butts heads with the chip leader and busts out. He was in good shape with t25,000, and he said himself 5 seconds later what a stupid play it was. So I made the money and the FT. First hand, I got JQ suited and pushed. Rivered a straight and quadrupled up, although still massively the short stack. Two more people bust before me, and I finished 7th and received a W2G, which is actually a high point for me. I'm not a big fan of jackpots and also buzzed about my cashing so I left without playing any cash games.

BELLAGIO - Played about 3 hours at 2/5. The play was very similar to the Wynn, except from this person on my right:

She was fairly aggressive but the deck did not treat her kindly and she lost a few bucks. My not being able to improve post-flop continued and I lost a buy-in and left.

VENETIAN - I tried this place for a change of pace. I wanted to play a noon tourney here but I messed around too much and didn't make it in time to try to satellite in. Having already done the Wynn $540, I wanted a discount on this one. This place was packed compared to how it usually is. There were only 5 or 6 empty tables. Again, no young drunken gamboolers that I could find. Everyone seemed to be 30 to 50 years old and sober as a judge. I couldn't even get drunk since cocktail waitresses were nowhere to be found, and I left in search of fish after only an hour. Play was almost identical to the Wynn players.

MGM - As with everywhere else, it was packed. I got on the lower NL lists, and the brush casually mentioned a new 5/5 game. Huh? 5/5? Not listed on the board, but the 5/10 "list of interest" has 8 names on it. Whatever. I sat down and bought in for $400. I had been buying into 2/5 for $300 so I figured I'd kick it up a notch. The difference between this game and 2/5 besides the smaller blind is the max is $1000. Then I saw that everyone except me and the guy on my left ($500) bought in for the max. Ruh roh. Looks like I'm not in Kansas anymore. You know what they say about finding the fish at the table, and it looks like it's me and they haven't dealt a hand yet. Okay, I'll look at it as tuition that every poker player pays at one time or another. These guys were in a whole different class than the 1/3 and 2/5 guys I've been playing all weekend.

First hand, guy with $500 on my left gets felted losing with boat over boat, IIRC. Ouch. Two hands later I wake up with Jacks, and bet a 10 high flop. Guy on my left is only caller, and 10 comes on the turn. I'm down to a little over $200 and basically figure I have no choice than to push because he will put me all-in if I check. Aha, this is what sucks about buying short if you play with good players. He calls with quad 10's. Ouch ouch. Three hands and two feltings. I re-buy, still with only $400 (the lesson hadn't sunk in yet) and hanging in for awhile, getting aces and some other nice cards. There is a super aggro two seats to my right (luckily) that pounces on any sign of weakness. He's dragging about every third pot. They're not huge but he's accumulating the chips. I left the table several times because of beer, either buying it or returning it to the sea, and missed some hands that someone must have taken from him. Guess that's something else I need to do better - keeping track of stacks, even while drunk.

Anyway, I wake up with AK of hearts, raise the standard $20, and get 5 callers. Flop comes with an Ace, but two clubs and one heart. I overbet the $120 in the pot with $200 to discourage club draws. All fold except Super Aggro. He had position on me so I must have been in one of the blinds. Turn came a heart. I had a nut flush draw and I put Super Aggro on a set because of his earlier call. With the $240 I had left and the money in the pot I figured I had the right price for a push for my heart draw, and even money if he was on a club draw. River missed us both and he stormed out of the room when I showed. I was surprised to see that I had him covered, but happy to be even after my quads beating, plus a little ahead. It was fun playing these guys because they really made me think about what was going on. If I did it on a regular basis, it could be very expensive though.

good tr, enjoyed it

you are correct about 5/5 players for the most part being a different league than your standard 1/2 player. True even here (canada).
