Here's my advice:

Buy the mom a present to give her in the hospital anything from flowers to jewelery.

We didn't get this far as a species by being fragile when we're young, don't be afraid that you'll break the kid.

I will second this. I was there for all 3 of mine and they were definitly the highlights of my life. I just couldn't bring myself to cut the cord though.
