In the movie Stargate, they unearthed the Stargate in Egypt in the early-mid 1900s and couldn't get it to work in the 50s then shelved it. Then, in the 90s they started trying again and got it working in a not entirely disimilar way to how they got their imagination portal working. But if you've seen Stargate, it's very clearly ALL based on it.

They get Kurt Russell because he had been in "that one movie that's kind of like this", so it's very obvious that it is Stargate.

They were going to make a sequel to Stargate but did ID4 instead. I can't find anything to suggest that ID4 originated as that sequel though.
