Default River WTF?

Unknown villain, 4th hand with him though the previous hand had some history. He opened to $3 or $3.5 and I reraise to $12 with 99, he pretty much instapushed and I folded. Then this hand came up

Poker Room skin
No Limit Holdem Ring game
Blinds: $0.50/$1
5 players
Converter

Stack sizes:
UTG: $134.35
Hero: $91.60
Button: $79.00
SB: $87.35
BB: $99.20

Pre-flop: (5 players) Hero is CO with J[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] A[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]
UTG folds, Hero raises to $4, 2 folds, BB calls.

Flop: K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 3[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 2[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] ($8.5, 2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $6, BB calls.

Standard pf raise and cont bet

Turn: A[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] ($20.5, 2 players)
BB checks, Hero checks.

I guess this check is debatable, I mix it up on the turn if I improve after cont betting, but I think a players most likely hand is Kx, so I plan on calling a decent bet or value betting if checked to.

River: A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] ($20.5, 2 players)
BB is all-in $89.2

This seems like a wtf push? It definately threw me off the way the hand was played, he seems to like his hand and it's an easy fold if I don't make trips here.

Instacall? Crying call? Crying Fold?

with the little bit of history you included, i think this makes it a call. If you bet the turn and he shoved the river i think its a different story too.

I think I would bet the turn ... I mean, how likely is he going to call you with a hand <AJ after your flop CB ? Against a decent player I would check back, but against a bad player, bet bet bet ....

To me thats's a C bet that has gone right for you and on the turn I'd be betting it for info. That way if you get called on the turn you only really have to decide if you put him on AQ - which to me looks a real chance - and the possibility is that he has put you on a King and slowplayed the turn waiting for you to hang yourself. Might be giving to much credit but you need the turn info.

Instacall.

He's getting greedy enough to make this profitable.

both betting the turn and checking the turn are good moves for various reasons, so I wouldn't get hung up there

If you think you can induce the bluff or if the villain will fold to a turn bet but call a river bet, it is good to check.

If the villain is a calling station, it is good to bet.

i would fold. i'd make this bet if i just pushed someone off a 3-bet preflop and then had a FH here.

from his point of view he gets no action if hero has nothing, and a value bet doesnt get much. if hero has a hand like this he might, just might call.

for these reasons, plus hero hasnt invested much, i like to fold here. from a small pot dont just suddenly go broke. if villain continues in this fashion you will get multiple opportunities to stack him. be patient

this isn't limit

I don't like a general rule like this

because it is all based on bet sizes in NL, it is sometimes better to give free cards.

Example:
If villain folds 90% of the time to a turn bet with a weak K here but calls 50% of the time on a river bet with that same weak K, it is better to just check behind.

I agree, although I always feel dumb when I guess wrong in these situations. It's not unthinkable that she has 33, 22, A3, or A2 -- the betting pattern fits all of these if you assume she was planning to check-raise the turn. But more likely she has the case ace (Trips are the nuts!) and a worse kicker or is trying some absurd bluff believing you can't possibly have checked top pair. You checked to induce a bet, and you've got a bet from a Villain who seems prone to overexuberance.
