that river sucks but i probably play the same i may fold to this villian here though, they rarely bet worse

if vill reads hands very well and is willing to make big calls, you can shove the flop

The only bluff hands he could have are 46 or total air. He would be more inclined to bet the turn with total air and 46 isnt too likely in a raised pot. So we should be concluding this is a value bet. I'd say KJ or a weirdly played set.

Can someone tell me what's up with people raising the flop with top pair and then checking it down if they don't improve?

This is bvb and we are given no reads. It's not unheard of for him to raise flop with top pair.... or maybe you can tell me what he'd raise the flop with at 3/6.

It always amazes me how clearly so many poker players telegraph their AK with the preflop raise you made, bet near-pot on flop then check the turn etc.

You really should read Sklansky's books where he repeatedly says that you put yourself in the WORST of all worlds by raising 3-4xBB preflop. You get called and go to flop and you have absolutely NO IDEA what villain holds and he controls the hand from that point on, especially if you just call then check the turn etc as you did. Basically you're telling him you got AK and asking him to shove cos he knows you have little idea what he has.
